What are your ways to save money on your bills in Winter?

More of a list of actions for me and deciding what is best.

Check Insulation in Your Loft
Repair or replace windows
Bleed radiators
Check your roof for damage
Lay carpet in rooms instead of laminate
Service your boiler
Install energy-saving light bulbs
Turn your thermostat down slightly
Upgrade the rendering on your home
Use draught excluders
Only heat rooms you use
Insulate pipes
Turn off plugs, not in use
Keep a blanket or jumper handy

Rendering is popular in my town. The settings on my heating boiler are set to regulate a constant warm temperature by controlling how much neat is allowed through the house. I think one mistake folks make is setting their combi boilers too high and on when not necessary. My priority outside of a boiler service last year was loft insulation as I tried to do it and it's abysmal. If this is something you need, I used a cost guide after getting a quote here. This should be done by Xmas.

Hot water bottles! Game changer for me when working from home in colder months. Two bottles, one for under the feet and another on my lap make all the difference - saves having to turn on heating when there's only me in the house. Also warm socks!

Hi @Jerry Evans thanks for the thoughtful reply - all right on target. We bought the house with the newly installed windows, so the contract was with the previous owners - not us. Would be nice if Crittall would honour their guarantee or even offer any help but they've yet to do the decent thing. They will not toss their installer under the bus for mis-selling them, nor will they obviously go on record saying they're not suitable for a marine/coastal environment. We're happy to be their test lab!. With respect to condensation the thermal break question is a good one - thanks. If there is one it's not visible and seems woefully ineffective. We have trickle ventilation for the house as a whole but it doesn't reach the windows unfortunately. We do have all the usual extractors and we're starting to look at further air circulation/ventilation solutions. Cheers Bill

I have always bought wrecks - I love renovating: and I completely agree with overpaying for a new renovation that is rubbish and soulless: I won't even view a house that has obviously been done up by one of the many "property developers" that infest London. I can cope with anything (have rectified asbestos, removed wood chip, put back period features and replaced everything from roof to digging up a floor to install underfloor heating in the past), but my absolute nos: dodgy neighbours/road, lack of off-street parking (London), a floor plan I can do nothing with, lack of potential to add value myself. I have seen (and met) some real horrors whilst looking for houses! Also, I have to have a period house: 1930s or older.

The canadian Rockies..definitely! the wide open skies, the beautiful snow & the almost constant sunshine belie the freezing temperatures..it feels warmer there than it does here! best of all..the bears are asleep.

Totally agree, Christopher Brummit. I persuaded a friend that the place for her kitchen was not in the one room overlooking the garden - which is where it was when she bought the house - but in the middle with the dining room at the front (with a fireplace) and the sitting room at the back with a gorgeous view. I also think it's worth thinking about the dining room's location. In my 1927 house, it's meant to be at the back which means it overlooks the garden. Meanwhile, the sitting room overlooks the road. I swapped and couldn't be happier especially as the room at the back is much bigger. Shake it up is what I do!

Couldn’t be bothered turning the rads off for those rooms we don’t use. One way or another it will draw the heat through.

We have what we have. We have no check list just common sense.

We had a Hive system fitted, making it easy to control heat in rooms we don’t always use. And it means we can leave heating off, or very low, when away, then have it back on so it’s warm when we get back. We turn lights out as much as possible in spaces we’re not using and use LED bulbs where possible, gradually changing over as bulbs need replacing. We’re considering an air source heat pump, but with an Edwardian house this might be a challenge! That said, it is a very warm house and is well insulated, although we could probably do more insulation. In the evenings we use our log burner at this time of year and don’t need much heat in the rest of the house. We kept our house with the original rooms rather than going open plan and I guess that helps with keeping the spaces warm. We also have thick curtains in the sitting room. Note to self: Maybe we should pull the curtains in other rooms to retain warmth. Angie

Check a small area before taking up the laminate- it does stop a lot of cold air coming through old drafty floorboards- it’s probably warmer to put a big rug over the laminate
