Transform 70s yellow brick exterior of our house?

How can I update the 70s exterior of our house on budget ? Not big fan of cladding.

That's actually a pretty good 70's exterior to work with as it has good proportions. There is a subtle section of feature stone which breaks up the brick work at the entry. The front windows are balanced and there aren't too many sections which helps keep it from looking dated. The rear windows look a bit like a jigsaw puzzle! So it depends on what you are up for ...
If it's possible to paint, you could soften the windows by going into a sage color range over white. If the sectioning in the windows bothers you, you could change the window style whilst at the same time changing frame color, a front door change to a more modern door and side panel might be all you need to give a newer feel to the exterior.

I think it’s a nice looking house. I would just change the stone cladding and put in sliding doors or whatever your preference at the back, perhaps making the door a bit taller to align with the left hand windows.

it really depends on what you don't like and your budget though

I might also paint the garage door a dark neutral

As Brand Nash Hicks said, it depends if you want to make a statement or not. Being in a close where all the houses are the same style, your house will stand out if you modify it. Is this exactly what you want? Has anyone else done any modifications? Personally I think the house doesn't have a particular style which you should preserve, so could be a blank canvas for a makeover. If you want to totally transform, I would definitely go the pale grey timber look in American Cape Cod style, with a lovely grey driveway as you noted, with white trims everywhere. Unless you want the garage to stand out, I would have it the same colour as the house (replace it with a paneled one). Putting a white pitched roof porch on would be great, but in proportion to the house. The garden also is going to make a huge difference to the look of the house. Depending on whether you like gardening or not, you could do a pretty cottage garden with lavender down the side of the driveway and a keyhole path into the middle of the main area with roses, hebes and other typical cottage garden annuals all around(no lawn area to mow). At the end of the day its about your budget and how radical you want to be. I have always wanted to do over a house from the '60s or '70s, as you could have free reign to do what you like. I fancy huge picture windows myself, but that is a real project. I wish you good luck.

It all comes down to budget as always. The bigger the budge the more you can do. I would be really mindful of the fact, that if you change the facade, it would be better if you could change the windows. The wood cladding I agree would look fabulous, you could have the bottom a lovely grey to tone in. However, neither will look good with bog standard white windows, as both look better with a dark grey, thinner Aluminium Frame or a Chunkier Sandy Beige Frame. When you add white windows, the effect is not quite so slick The pic above shows the white windows with the cladding and it would look a lot better with the darker, thinner frames. If you can't afford to change or colour bond the windows, then maybe go for all over colour, a dark grey would be good, and consider changing the Front door for impact. Alternatively, work towards doing the ultimate change. The vertical wood cladding, with a grey underneath and a door to match the wood. Thinner dark pewter aluminium framed windows etc. sorry about the mock up quality!

Hi Edwina, It's going to be the greenery that makes a big difference to this. Plants are used for softening designs all the time both exterior and interior. I love the garage doors and think ever have done a great job too - well done. We want to keep the driveway because it’s ample of space for us with 2 vehicle and people to pop over. I prob need to explain why we are having the windows done black… basically out the back of the house we have french door which are being changed to Crittal doors which will be black. We also love black with the red brick. I absolutely hate the tiles like with a passion. We have added plants infront of the door pillars and new lights and a new door number. But our personal opinion is the extension looks like an add on. Therefore we might as well make it stand out some more. Like some people render it etc Here is a vision

What sort of budget are you working on ? There are many options:-

Replace/paint windows

Render

Replace/Paint garage door

Replace cladding with a grey washed teak. Also clad over stone to match and replace front door to modernise.

Saw on TV recently a very similar issue, which they fixed with a permanent stain which subtly darkened the brickwork. Worked very well.
