Design Dilemma Living Rooms

Living room layout advice

Hi, I’m planning to re-do my living room including buying new furniture. It’s a slightly awkward rectangular shape with door, large window, patio doors, fireplace and TV. I’ve never quite liked the layout as is but can’t work out a better way to do this while maintaining access to the patio doors. Any suggestions? Thank you.

It does look tricky! One thing could be to lose that awkward corner with the tables and lamps and instead put in a large corner sofa and coffee table. You could perhaps then lose the need for the other side tables. You could put one of those large lamps with a long curved base behind the sofa

Yes maybe you’re right Nicola, I have thought about corner sofa before but I’m not a big fan of them and also wonder if it would leave the other half of the room a bit bare. Thanks for the idea!

There are plug sockets on every wall, two on the wall with the bit that comes out where the fireplace used to be, the layout image is just what I took from the estate agents listing for my house when I bought it :) I love the idea of adding the fireplace back in! I wasn't sure if it would make the room feel smaller or not but that inspiration image looks great

Carolina, thank you, you give so much time to thas - it has given us loads to think about. We really would need to get used to the room being divided by the sofa though. We have had it that way but it made the room very small and squashed,feeling we were all sitting so close to the fire and the rest of the room unused. I have also had two 3 seater sofas coming out from the fireplace, facing each other, with a table between. I liked that as it opened the room up and it felt 'social', my partner liked it less because of difficulty viewing the tv. At the minute Ring the sofas form more of an L shape, on the wall to the left and the wall facing the windows. With the TV between the windows we can all watch TV and see the fire, without sitting behind each other. The open space is great. The downside of this layout is that if as a family we are sitting on both sofas some people can't see each other so conversation is difficult. Another thought for me was 2 of the Harrington chaise sofas - as one would fit in front of the window and stretch into the alcove beside the fire, the other would sit facing the TV and wouldn't stick out beyond the wall where the door is. This would be great for seeing each other and talking. There would still be space for 2 chairs or a sofa on the left hand wall. Unfortunately for good family time, the compromise might have to be 'looks'.

Here's what I would do: Place the TV to the right of the fireplace, and arrange the main seating area at that end of the room. I'd place a 7-8' sofa on the long wall facing the french doors, and add two club chairs at a right angle to the sofa facing the fireplace and TV. Then add a coffee table/ottoman and occasional tables on either side of the sofa. At the other end of the room, you could have a round game table with chairs, or a reading nook or a piano, depending on what you like to do in the room besides watch TV. I'd also remove the lighting fixtures, carpet and window coverings. Do you know what is under the carpet? It would be wonderful if there were wood floors!

I think it looks a good layout. I would only wonder if the side table by the patio doors is needed? Would it clutter the exit/entry to the doors?

Hi there, are you able to share where you got to with this please? I have a very similar room, the entrance door is behind your sofa on the other end of the same wall. Thank you
