Duration of rat removal solutions

I’m planning to hire this rat pest control service that seals entry points with gnaw-proof materials and barriers. But I’m wondering how long rat removal solutions would last. Will I need it monthly or just twice a year? Let me know, please. Thanks!

I had rats in my garden (I feed the birds) and I read that they hate the smell of peppermint oil. I knew where the burrow was so I got some oil, soaked some cotton wool in it and then placed them at the entrances to their burrow. I haven’t seen a rat since. It may be an option to try before calling in pest controllers? I got the oil from Amazon. At least it’s safe to wildlife and children.

Sonia’s suggestions sounds fabourable and cost effective. I would ask the company who you intend to use regarding the expiry date if you decide to use them.

Hi @Jerry Evans thanks for the thoughtful reply - all right on target. We bought the house with the newly installed windows, so the contract was with the previous owners - not us. Would be nice if Crittall would honour their guarantee or even offer any help but they've yet to do the decent thing. They will not toss their installer under the bus for mis-selling them, nor will they obviously go on record saying they're not suitable for a marine/coastal environment. We're happy to be their test lab!. With respect to condensation the thermal break question is a good one - thanks. If there is one it's not visible and seems woefully ineffective. We have trickle ventilation for the house as a whole but it doesn't reach the windows unfortunately. We do have all the usual extractors and we're starting to look at further air circulation/ventilation solutions. Cheers Bill

Hi Emmeline, We completely agree with Aye Gardening. Softwood requires maintenance, and if you do not have the time to keep it good looking, we recommend you go for composite decking, such as Millboard. We have also seen some amazing transformation with Millboard Composite Decking, as it requires very little maintenance, it has good slip-resistance, it doesn't age, and can be used in damp areas as well - such as pool surrounds. Hi ... As you see on my profile picture, the front door is very much at the office, the only way to reach the house is via the main driveway to the black door. It's because the driveway is so long, the house is behind another house, and currently we dont have our "own" boundaries at the side of the driveway at the main road to post a sign on that some have an issue finding us....we will get to rectifying that. Even if we did allow access via the path to the utility room (which we dont want to do), that path also doesnt reach the main road either, and looks like an entrance to the new telephone exchange next door with identical gate to theirs (we are the "old" exchange). The main door was the utility but now I changed things and put the new entrance in, it's very obvious that going further than the office front door is private. Trust me... bloke with a sledge hammer has happened here already, several men 2200Watt demolition hammers... this place doesnt wan't to budge! I agree on the macerator, but it's the only way, I have however taken heed and re-planned to to only need one, not crazy 3. None of the internal walls are structural so to speak... apart from holding up the ceiling, which I add that is not sufficient as an upstairs floor using beams that should have been bigger than there is. The house is adapting through stages of also being able to live in it. While we tear down one part of the house, 2 bedrooms needed to be in service, the one bathroom retained, and the kitchen/laundry are going nowhere. Currenty the newly "finished" rooms are the Office, kitchen, Laundry, Bedrooms 2 & 3, the hallway(stairwell) shaped up and about to cut the bathroom door, the in floor electrics are in the living room, 65" wall mounted tv. Basically, we are working from one end to the other whilst keeping it liveable. Upstairs is future /maybe at this point. To be brutally honest, I dont think the architect has given it a thought, and in the latest plan actually removed a steel truss to make rooms look like will work, odd cupboards at the extremes, diagonal steel truss through bathroom, no thought to head height or where the plumbing services are. I'm sending a plan back with everything stripped out of the loft bar the master bedroom because of this... What I want to know, is how we are going to construct the floor and ventilate the loft etc... I cant say I'm enjoying it anyway, and I thought it was going to be and exciting move for the money :(

I cant figure out how to send a private message either! £15k on interior design / space planning alone was our budget for a 5 bedroom house refurbishment - I would say that ours definitely isnt ’light touch’ though - we get everything from the from the paint specification to a shopping list for every room and then a styling trip to come and do all of the finishing touches. Every room has everything from the floor covering to the window treatments to the files and designs for bespoke furniture. All rooms come with proffesional lighting plans, which can be handed over to an electrician. We paid around £3k for the structural engineer and £1k for the architect. We managed the project ourselves, so I dont have a comparison for that element i’m afraid but I certainly dont think that number looks unreasonable. I would definitely find out exactly what you are going to get for that money but honestly, presuming that the house is of significant value and your build cost is also significant (clearly important for spend to be relative) then that doesnt seem to be an unfair cost to me. Getting your space planning and interior design right, is a massive part of any project and can vastly change the look and feel of the finished house. We’ve all seen examples where people have spent A LOT of money on major reburbishments and the end result just looks a bit ’blah’ - its there in my opinion that an extra 5–10% of the overall cost would have completely transformed and ’polished’ the final result. Appreciate design is not possible for everyones budget but if its a possibility for you and you like the quality of their work, then I dont think that figure is out of the way.

I've learned from my Kitchen fitter that they hate any kind of change. You can block holes around garden fences and wall etc. thus disturbing their usual routes. Spraying Jeyes fluid along their runs is also effective - like peppermint, they detest the smell. You can, for a week, stop feeding the birds and restrict access to water (if you have a pond, put a mesh over it) and they will move on. Good luck!

Just stumbled upon your post and wanted to share my two cents on the rat removal question. When it comes to these pesky critters, patience and persistence are key. It can take some time to see a noticeable decrease in rat activity, especially when dealing with larger infestations.

n my experience, getting a reliable pest control company on the job can work wonders. They'll know all the ins and outs and can offer expert advice on not just removing the rats, but keeping them away for good. Also, keeping an eye on potential entry points and sealing them up is a smart move. Rats are crafty little buggers and can squeeze through the tiniest gaps!
