Garden project ideas and app recommendations

We have a new home and the garden hasn't been touched. We have an idea of what we want in the garden but layout and inspiraration is needed. Does anyone have any apps to recommend I can design the space and generally any ideas! Pic below of garden size, it's not massive.

Hi there,

Yes,Pinterest is very good for ideas, Houzz has some good inspirational pictures as well and you can also find a lot of food for thought on pictures on Instagram.

Just by having a look at your pictures I think that it would be nice to invest in some tall planting to distract your eyes from the walls that surround you (seating somewhere like this gives you a bit of a prison yard feeling). Also, from the picture it looks like the garden is not that big, so I would go for seating area and very generous and lush planting beds (would not have lawn). Now, what to plant and where depends on your garden conditions (amount of light, soil etc etc) if you want a health and thriving garden that is resistant to pests and diseases. Also, it is a very good exercise to have a good thinking about what you want out of your garden so that you can make sure you add in all the elements to allow you to havem them.

Personally I think the grass, yellow bricks and the fence are a bit too uninspiring. How about trying to break it up a bit - thin beds with climbers against fence and extra beds / pots / paths to add different levels. Think of cakes on a cake stand, the more levels, the better it looks. Red cedar slatted fence to replace the existing, trailing plants over the walls. Talk to a good gardener to talk about the right plants for their position and also consider doing a watering system to make it super low maintenance (they don't cost the earth). Good luck with it - post some photos of the project!

Firstly, have a 'blitz' day - Clear the clutter and pots, sweep up the leaves and spray the slabs with a water & bleach soloution. Remove any plants you don't want/like (I suggest removing the pompom tree as it seems a little in the way.) Decide what 'style' you want for your garden - easy care/modern/traditional/pretty Decide on a budget for the project - do you want to redo the paving? Or even lay a timber decking over that area? I would suggest a path to the clothes line and borders around the edge of the garden. Once you've had a tidy-up, give us some more photos and an idea of what you like in terms of style.

Not sure if you have now sorted out your garden lighting yet I've only just come across your question! i think the most important thing is to work out first of all how you would like to use the garden space, whether its to relax in, socialize in, kids/grandkids to play in, to enjoy from the house and or different focal points within the garden, is there an area that gets say evening sun and that's the time you both get home and want to enjoy a meal/drink in the evening sun? do you need storage areas? outside cooking area? how much time do you have to spend upkeeping it? (and be honest! too many people aren't believe me lol), how much money you have to spend, both on landscaping and maintenance, once you really know what you want from it, have a search though houzz at the different styles of gardens and start getting an idea of what you like and come up with a board with clippets of different styles, doesn't matter if it takes time, best to get the basic's right before spending any money before planting, its worth getting the soil tested for its type, ph and nutrient level, this will also help work out what plants you will be able to grow sorry I haven't helped with styles or direct ideas, I feel its your own space and to get the best from it you need to understand more what you require from it and what you can give to get out of it most of all good luck and enjoy turning the lovely space into a garden that you can enjoy

Apps are all well & good, but as Deborah suggests, when it comes to garden design, it is well worth getting some more professional input. I've seen too many spaces look good for a year and then quickly get out of control, as no-one has consider planting layouts and how different plants will grow over time.

So commmon isnt it? I once arrived in a garden in which cordylines had been used to underplant an olive tree and then they matured and the client found out that they were actually trees not grasses. I also often get told that plants were chosen because the flowers looked really pretty, but then they found out that the flowering period was extremelly short and the plant didnt bring much interest to the garden most of the time.

As the area is pretty small, I think a courtyard style garden would look lovely, no lawn. Treat it like an outdoor living room with gorgeous planting, paving and furniture. Often people pave edge to edge, forgetting to leave nice borders for the plants. I think a good designer will really help you. Garden design is a skill that takes years to perfect and I don’t think apps do the job at all. Many designers will create a design and planting scheme if budget doesn’t allow for the garden design service.
