Hi there! We are planning to redo the terrace in front of our bungalow this spring/summer. We would like to make it larger. Any inspiration for us in terms of new layout, materials, colours, sectioning etc. ??

Do you require some sort of covering over it or will it be open? There are so many possibilities. It looks as though you have a slope down from the existing terrace so quite a job to get it completely flat for tiling or whatever finish you chose. I would consider the type of decking that is low maintenance. It looks like wood but is a type of plastic. That way you could escape the cost of building up the ground below. You could build it on a sort of piled support.

I have built-in closets under the eaves of an American Bungalow style house in three bedrooms. They measure about 6'x 4', and my son even has a bed in one that is slightly larger, but the ceiling height is between about 2 1/2 and just barely 5 feet, so they aren't as efficient as they can be. In the master, I moved the rod to the back wall (it used to be only the depth of a hanger from the door) and down to a height to hang shirts and jackets, a little over 3' up, and this freed up the two existing short rods on the sides that are set about 4 plus feet up from the floor--long enough for most dresses, skirts and suits and such. This sort of U shaped arrangement works pretty well and the corners are for boxed out of season clothes and a short revolving (sort of a wire Lazy Susan) shoe rack.

Following on from radicalman's comment, even if you can't afford to do everything at once, ask the architect to draw up exactly what you want to achieve and to set it out so you can do it in several logical stages if need be, so you end up with a cohesive whole. You'll save money that way and end up with a pleasing whole. - someone I know has spent a fortune on their 70s bungalow doing loads of separate projects: add a conservatory, convert the loft, new kitchen, make the garage into a utility room, patio behind the house, fountain in front(!) change the windows and sadly, despite having spent a fortune over the years, has ended up with a sad looking bungalow containing a warren of small rooms and no flow whatsoever.

Start with the basics of where the sun goes (Aspect) and how you'd like to use the space e.g dining table, loungers, space for kids or a grown up sanctuary and so on. Then look at practical considerations such as creating privacy/blocking views you don't want (for example the houses to the rear right), and pay attention to the boundaries - your walls and trellis look like they need a makeover - so remember to factor this into your budget (and I'd consider painting the 'man cave' :)If your existing patios at each end are staying as they are, you could consider making the middle section a mix of planting and paths (ditch the lawn idea altogether) with some seating mixed in (unless you lave kids that need to kick stuff about of course. Or pop in some raised beds to create some change of level interest. If you're not engaging a designer then definitely mark out your plot on graph paper and sketch out some ideas. By the way if you want fruit trees, think about espaliered trees etc which are great space savers - but you need to pick your sunniest spot.

moving the toilet ultimately depends on where the soil pipe is and how to get to it (showers and sinks are easy as the pipes are small) You could get the loft converted into a bathroom, or cut the front bedroom in half and repurpose the closet doorway to access a built in bathroom/wardrobe and then knock the galley through all the way to the end (or just demolish the end bathroom for more garden space as it'll only be an add-on) In the plan the old doorway to the yard is bricked up and the doorway to the bathroom becomes the new door out, it creates a nice little area down the side for a more intimate garden patio and a larger garden area at the end. the soil pipe I've assumed comes down the side of the entryway and gets concealed into the room to go out to a sewer at the front (if possible, it still might be possible to run a soil pipe horizontally with a slight descent through the floorto the back)
