Pre-teen bedroom layout
I’m struggling with the potential layout of my son’s room. (Please excuse the mess). We want to redecorate, new furniture, requirements would be a gaming desk (possibly L-shaped, drawers and wardrobe as currently he doesn’t have enough drawers, shelves for storage, bedside table, and he wants a small double. I’ve seen pictures of the bed coming from the chimney breast wall but then not sure of this would work as I’d have to figure out where the TV goes. Potentially I’m thinking of the bed being on the opposite wall to the chimney breast, possibly built in wardrobe/storage in one alcove - but I’m very indecisive! He also says he wants one wall with graffiti wallpaper so undecided as to whether it should be the chimney breast wall or the opposite. I’ve attached a photo of the room currently and dimensions, any comments much appreciated.

Comments (85)It looks great, I'm glad you and your daughter are so pleased and she has lots of room for friends over, playing etc. It can also be easily and cheaply adapted as she grows if she wants. My only criticism (if you can call it that) is that if not already your daughter may soon also want the desk to double up as a dressing table and therefore I think a mirror was a good idea but the memo board (which looks great) can always be moved as and when needed. (I thought i'd posted a comment on that previously but obviously not!). I might also add a desk light there for working during winter months. I think we will indeed go with this layout idea. the wardrobe is actually against the narrow wall flush with the door. I love the long narrow desk idea (toyed with it for the brother's room) and the shop where we bought brother's bed works w/Italian brand that makes just that! We could probably get a plank + leg fitted for cheaper and even use his current desk against that wall while we figure that part out. We would have hoped to have the master bedroom at the back of the house overlooking the garden rather than the street, but realise it would be tricky to place the door given the location of the stairs and landing. Can’t have everything! It has been suggested to us to extend at the back 2 stories. I’m really torn, I know it’s a very sensible idea (and realistically I think we are not going to be fitting 4 beds and 2 bathrooms in the space on my floor plan) but I’m worried it will impose too much on our garden. The length of the garden is 12.36m from the original rear wall of the house, and 10.83m from the rear wall of a small double storey extension that was done before we moved in (next to the side access) A 3m double storey extension at the back would reduce it to 9.36m in length. Garden is 8.56m wide so essentially it would turn into a square garden. Only other option to increase bedroom space is going up into the loft but that would mean raising the roof which is v pricey) Also we were keen for the 1st storey to be a little ‘longer’ than the 2nd storey so to allow some roof lights or something like that - south facing garden so plenty of sunshine (when the weather allows!) - but if we do 4m rear extension for the first storey this would mean reducing garden size even more. I think we wouldn’t be able to have the downstairs toilet door where you’ve suggested as it would mean moving the location of the front door, which is currently directly opposite the stairs and opens onto the wall where you’ve put the toilet door. But we could have the toilet accessible from the utility instead, and move the washer and dryer to under the stairs - I think there’s a good 2m of space before the height under the stairs would get down to 1m so probably fine to pop that in there. I’m glad you suggested scaling down the side extension, I think I was just wanting maximum space as possible but then it created that awkward corner in the open plan which I didn’t know what to do with! Comments (48)We were on our way to removing the RH long bit to make the desk straight but stopped here at a half-way house position - just to consider it. We do a lot of procrastinating in my house!! Means retaining the large corner space. Needs a new top, obvs and in a different shape, probably curved? What do you think? Now got a fair bit of free wall. 3 months agoCould you do something like this across the chimney breast or does it have to be a gaming desk? (may be a silly question given his age but would double up for homework etc) I’d probably not go standard depth for the wardrobe given the width of the room
I’d have the bed opposite the CB and then a low chest of drawers for a bedside table.
Given your son’s age I guess a number of toys may be going soon? Or you could look at a storage bed if they’re not often used

3 months agoIt sounds like the square footage has to work very hard. If there is sufficient budget consider under bed storage in order to have more room for a great desk.

11 days agoSo a little update - the room is painted and we are yet to hang the graffiti wallpaper - but I am now very indecisive on the colour of the furniture - I want to go for a darker rustic look of furniture whilst my husband says it wouldn’t fit the paint colour (it’s a very very light grey, almost white). We have decided to keep the wardrobe (to cut costs as we also want to do my daughter’s room) and we have sourced the desk. Because we are keeping the white wardrobe, my husband thinks a white bed also. But I am stuck on the idea of rustic looking furniture - would it look odd with a white bed and the bedside tables/desk/shelving units being a rustic colour? Picture attached of the kind of look I want and the painted room.

11 days agoIndustrial - yes, that’s the word I’m looking for!! Thank you!! I love the look of shelves that have pipes as the supports so am looking into those. I think husband just wants a white bed as he thinks the wardrobe would look out of place but it will actually be in the left alcove so not central to your eye when in the room. We have been looking at a white wooden bed, my initial thoughts were to have an ottoman but divan style has crossed my mind - we’ve only ever had wooden beds in our house so maybe a change would be good - I hadn’t thought of changing the headboard, this could be an option! Thank you both - I absolutely love this site!

11 days agoMy teenage son has just had his bedroom re-decorated in similar style. He has a black iron/metal bed with plenty of storage space underneath. Also got him 2 bright red school lockers to use as bedside cabinets - these are great as they have loads of storage and come in different heights and lots of colours. I think this would work in your son’s room -
