Give crazy paving a face lift?

Our whole drive and paths and terrace area are crazy paving - the mumti coloured version! it makes everything look dated but we currently dont jave the budget to torally redo it does anyone have pictures that show it painted or any other ideas? thank you!

There’s a story here but really yours doesn’t look that bad, it could be an awful lot worse!

Maybe just try eliminating the pink to start off with and see what that’s like?

I would just powerwash it and wait until you have the budget to replace it. Work on the climbers and surrounding garden beds as things take so long to grow here. I don't think it looks that bad. Dated yes but clean and tidy and no weeds.

Agree with Oneplan about the glazed porch so you don't lose light, think you should let her draw up elevation plan for builders. Agree with people telling you to play up the asymmetry. Also think you should have a tame( not rampant) flowering climber up the posts around the porch. Something that tolerates shade. If has thorns may discourage kids climbing up on porch roof.

Here's an update on the work. I've finished the pebbledash first coat, and the painter did the fascias, soffits, door and window. The green I chose came out a lot darker than I thought, but never mind. What do you think? What's left to do is add some nice pots in front, put up the guttering (I'm going to do that now), another coat of the white masonry paint, and of course the most important part, put a cat image in the window!

Hi John, We would always suggest external insulation rather than internal insulation, where you have the option, because as John Botham states there is a real risk of interstitial condensation, and potential mould and damage to the structure. If you do need to do it internally be careful not to add to much and ensure it is fitted carefully without gaps and with a good vapour barrier - especially around electric sockets etc. if you use a product such as Kingspan. It is also vital that you return the insulation in around the windows, this makes significant differences to overall performance and the risk of condensation and mould at this point, though this insulation can be thinner. We often recommend a breathable insulation such as Pavadentro when internal insulation is required, as this allows the moisture to come in and out of the wall. Careful detailing at internal wall junctions, floors and roof are also needed, along with good airtightness sealing, while you are doing it. Putting a price on external insulation is difficult as it depends on many factors, such as needing to move down pipes, extending eaves etc, along with thickness and type of insulation. A good render, installed correctly should last many years without the need for any maintenance and can perform to a much higher standard than internal. The brickwork for the current TV stand is tied into the chimney, removing it would need some remedial work which will be noticeable. The salvaged bricks from removing the TV stand can be used to replace the side bricks in the chimney and to tie them back in. Once the TV cabinet is removed I doubt there would be neat brickwork behind it. It would really need the alcoves plasterboarding and skimming then which seems a shame. Brickwork can be saved on the chimney if fitting an inset stove into the existing builders opening. If wanting to open it up the only way would be to cut down the bond in the bricks and open it up. There would be a fair bit of work in it to make it look neat and finished. Without seeing it though it is hard to give 100% accurate advice.

I’ve seen worse. It doesn’t look that bad. Problem with paint is it can make it look worse as it chips and scrapes. Paint never lasts long. I would live with it until funds are available. With terrace perhaps lay down an outdoor to hide some of it?

It’s an ironic thing but what is ‘dated crazy paving in the US and Australia, etc, is gorgeous stone paving here in Italy. We’re Australians who, as of four years ago, live in a five storey and fundamentally quite plain rendered historic palazzo with a steep, terraced backyard that’s entirely paved in ‘crazy paving’, and when we first bought the place my husband hated the paving and thought it was going to be impossible to make it look decent. Now, though, he and everyone else love it and nobody thinks it looks dated anymore. Play around with a few ideas and I’ll guarantee you it can look wonderful!
