Living room layout, please help

last month

I wrote here a few weeks ago, but I can't find that post now. We are redecorating our living room. The pictures show the current living room (please ignore the mess!)
We are debating between two plans
1. Media wall where the TV is, and a sofa on the left wall and a sofa in the middle (like in the picture) which will divide the living room. However we're not sure how to make use of the other half in front of the patio doors.
2. Remove the window in the room nd the fireplace. Create a media wall where the window is and put a sofa opposite and on the current TV wall. And may be a chair opposite the patio door.
Any thoughts on the two ideas or any new thoughts, please can you share? Thank you very much in advance.

I'm so happy to help. If the room can be empty I find it really helpful to tape my furniture out on the floor just so you can see how it feels.

Hi. I hope I got it right. You do not need kitchen upstairs and you want to turn whole floor to a relaxing area for you two. Right? See what I would do on the picture. You do not need to move or remove the fireplace if you set furniture around that it makes symmetry illusion. Placing to sofas opposite each other will serve symmetry and generous relaxing space for both of you. Instead of dining room I would place a nice comfy lounger with and arch lamp and side table and a bookcase along the wall to create a beautiful place for reading. Kitchen can be replaced by bedroom with a walk-in closet or whether is possible could be also en-suite. I have also different idea but information about you is not enough to make a proper suggestion.

One of the things people tend to do when arranging furniture in a room is push all the furniture to the perimeter of the room. Bring the left sofa tighter into the middle of the room. Then place a narrow console behind it to give you an area for some slim lamps and some pretty bits, You could even have a narrow bookcase type thing on that wall. Let us know what you think if you try it :)

I like this one with the symmetry with the fire. I might swap the loveseat for the armchair to give more space for a lamp and side table. I would also swap the chair in the bottom right for a smaller chair so there’s more space to get in the room. I think a footstool on legs in the sofa colour won’t visually fill the room. i’d probably also put the shelves in the alcoves (I guess those pictured are about the same width as yours) I dont know if that will seat everyone on a daily basis though! I love the cut outs, you can also use masking tape on the floor so you can walk around everything to get a proper feel

Hey SN,

I have a couple of questions about the room - do you have any non-negotiable, furniture you have to use and activities for the space - will it be the TV room, is it the only TV room in house?

Hi Jessica, thanks for your response. No there are no non negotiable furniture. We do want to keep the TV, its the main TV in the house.

We are leaning towards the second option. Closing off the window and creating a media wall there, may be extending the patio doors further to the left to open up the room a bit more.

It seems a shame to block up a window. Might be worth covering it with thick cardboard to give an idea what the room would be like if it was closed up.

Hi Angie. Thank you for your thoughts. We had a similar thought too, hence the apprehension. We have tried it and it does darken that end of the room especially on a grey cold day. However since we are thinking that will be the TV corner of the living room it might be okay. And the future plan is to replace the current patio door with bifold/french doors and make it a bit wider (so the media wall will be smaller), in which way light in the room won't be an issue. Nit sure if summer heat will be worse though.

Thank you for your response, I would be so cautious about blocking up the window, I think you will loose so much light - I have mocked up a couple of layout options for you.

Option 1 - removal of fireplace and leave window.

Option 2 - change the window to a tall bi-folding door

It would be great to know your thoughts and if you have any questions at all! If you have a prefer over the layouts?

Thank you Jessica, in layout 2, we are a bit concerned about the glare from the window and patio doors on the TV. And sofas facing away from the garden view too.

Interesting idea about turning the window to patio doors though, certainly will consider.

What's your view on expanding the patio door. In your layout 2, we basically combine the patio door and the window size but together on the right side. So one long bifold door of say over 2/3rd or the wall. And the 1/3rd being the media unit in the corner. Any thoughts?

Yes absolutely! I would definitely recommend blinds and curtains just to give you flexibility on the amount sunlight in the room for layout 2. Yes the sofa is facing away from the garden, but with the addition of the 2 accent chairs, you still get a lovely view out of the window! :)

Ooo absolutely, the joy of sketching it out just give you more ideas and food for thought.

That is definitely an idea, the media unit will be the focal point in the room for sure and you don't want it too look to small in the room - I would be tempted to make it a bit bigger and make sure that the TV would be in good spot from the sofa. Too far along and you won't get a great view and that is important for this room!

Let me sketch it up for you so at least you can have a look at the options. Jessica

as an update, we're going to go with this layout.. and deciding whther to paint one wall dark navy blue, the opposite wall with a wallpaper (next to patio doors).

The long wall will be a soft white and media wall either light colour or a light pinkish chocolate colour.. the sofa colours in the image below are not decided but just modelled.

Just would really like to hear your thoughts about wallpaper/paint and colours.

We are thinking og Hague blue on one short wall, navy wallpaper on the opposite wall near to the patio doors and Elephants breath or something similar om the long walls (opposite the patio door).

Do you think 2 opposite short walls with dark colour is a good idea?
