Cottage bedroom ideas

Buying a tiny cottage and want to create a light but inviting bedroom. The walls are all painted white at the moment, 3 being stone and the one behind where the bed will go is wood panel.
At some point in its history the oak floor has been painted black which I think I will have to live with. There is one quite small window opposite the bed area.
I’ve got no furniture yet so I am looking for both furniture ideas and curtain and bedding patterns and colours.
Sounds simple but I can’t seem to get to grips with what will look good with the black floor. Any ideas more than welcome

The radiator is to be moved (no idea where to) as this is where the bed head will sit and the cupboard in the corner can be taken out. The main window is opposite where the radiator is currently positioned and looks straight out on to a river

Don’t have dimensions but the en suite looks larger than it needs to be. I would move the wall between bedroom and en suite back a few feet then you could have wardrobe storage space along the bedroom side of the new stud wall. As building a new stud wall you could have a pocket door and I would put the bed and bedside tables as in the diagram above facing the window. In the ensuite I would make the shower as wide as possible stretching between the new stud wall and the exterior window wall and put the toilet and basin side-by-side along the window wall

Have a look at leggy furniture. Items that have legs which lift them away from the floor, over items (say beds) that sit on the floor. You could stay with lighter colours, either painted or blonde woods to keep the furniture feeling light.

If you hate the floor colour it would be worth trying to sand an area to see if it could easily be sanded back to original oak. Hiring an industrial belt sander for a day is inexpensive. I would be looking to put the Bedhead on the white wall once you have removed the cupboard so you have windows on your left. I think blinds would be the obvious choice for the windows and probably roller blinds as the windows are small and Roman blinds would block too much light. If you don’t want to touch the floor than a large sisal rug would lighten it and bring in natural colours and you could have small patterned rugs or sheepskins either side of the bed for softness. It looks lovely and sounds like you have a beautiful spot too!

Oh and it goes without saying that if you could expose some of the original stone wall that would be decorative in itself!

An industrial sander will easily remove the dark paint, but if that’s too much of an effort then a nice big rug situated under the bed will add cosiness. As far as decor goes, this is where we need Laura Ashley! Although all the shops have shut, Next sell a lot of their products so worth a look. Here’s some country cottage style images to inspire, I hope! Pinterest is a great place to get cottage style ideas.
