Design Dilemma Living Rooms

Media wall bottom shelf.. logs? Ornaments?

Hi

recently had a media wall built, not finished yet but wondering what people would think would look best in the bottom shelf,

- stacked logs

- lighting & ornaments

- painted black and ornaments

or any other ideas would be great

Hi

I think logs would only look good if it fitted with the rest of room design/feel and looking at your photo, this room is probably decorated in a more contemporary fashion?

Therefore, I would keep it simple. Add some lighting and simple ornaments/pictures.

Preferably LED strip lighting but if you cannot retro fit these then you can pick up some decent battery/remote operated one.

yes your right i dont think the logs would fit in with the room style thinking about it. would you keep the colour of shelf the same as it is? or black to match behind tv, or even white? thanks for your advice

HI Sarah I love what you have achieved. Many congrats for embracing what you have and creating something that totally enhances the placement of the fireplace. The space looks like it was made for the placement of that perfect chair and you've done a gorgeous job with your selection and placement of art . I am moving with considerable grief from my gorgeous arts and crafts bungalow to an early1970s small house. I have to say this style of architecture in NZ wasnt exactly a highlight. But I set myself a challange to embrace the architecture and look to enhance rather than fight it . That challenge shifted me off my despair track and now I am excited and hopeful and thinking about space and colour and the amazing light pouring in (a quality of houses of this time)..and textures . i feel so cteative in new and diffetent ways...and it's so exciting. seeing what you have achieved - it is very affirming for me I love what you have created.

I had no idea whether anyone would even see my post never mind helping so much - absolutely delighted with everyone's comments as I really am clueless and even after everyone's suggestions I'm still umming and arring about colours and patterns now. GuigsART - really fab work and I've added you to my wish list :) Lynne Harper - thank you for your great suggestions :) I agree re full length curtains as they would have been my first choice but unfortunately as the windowsill is quite with a radiator underneath aswell the curtains would be at an angle so not sure it would look ok. I love the idea of a beam style mantel but was worried it would look mismatched and that the windows being so 1950's would highlight this? I'm a novice though so would appreciate any further advice about what styles not to mix and whether this would be the case. The cabinet behind the door doesn't look great at all I agree. Sarah McNally - aw thank you for wishing my luck...wishing I'd been blessed with a natural flair for this...hadn't realised how hard it is! :) Those colours do sound really nice to me actually and thank you so much for the images you attached - I appreciate it and helps me a lot. I've been finding it hard to apply the visual I look at to my actual room. Don't suppose you've come across any good apps or free software that helps you to do that if you upload your own photos? I love Starburst mirrors! Been thinking about one of those for ages to keep with window style. Sara Smith - thank you and I agree completely that the fire looks cold - I think the whole room does as does the rest of my house as this is only just the first room I'm beginning to tackle! I was worried that unless I went the whole hog and kept the same theme as the windows (which I'm not changing) that any other style of fire surround would look mismatched hence we left it bare. Thinking a large painting or wondering if a really dark colour on that wall with maybe the sunburst mirror or something else would soften this?? no idea. Mushti2112 - thank you too and it's hard to tell from the photo actually but inbetween where the existing sofas meet is a stepped wall where we had to build in a waste pipe to enable us to move the toilet upstairs from back of the house to the front. So unfortunately a corner sofa wouldn't work - would love one otherwise. soozmacrae - really good point re mirror...just my novice attempt to put something there when we moved in :) Katy N - thank you and what do you think about the below? Saw this and as I'm too scared to go for a dark colour in case I don't pull off getting all the other colours etc right in the rest of the room...was wondering about a light grey for the alcove unit and shelves??

Beano, all my tech is stuff I get from family/freecycle so nothing is permanently installed. A Google thingy in the back combined with an old BT box makes this old telly 'smart', but when it dies there'll inevitably be another generation of obsolete tech being thrown out which I'll gratefully take off people's hands. I'm just as reliant as consumer capitalism as everyone else, just more of a bottom feeder. The remote control for the Google hub works through the logs BTW ;-)

Hi Minnie, TV is work in progress...blame the OH, we can never agree! The unit is awaiting the sale room reopening though. Wall mounted or tv media unit will be needed. When I first planned the room with help on here, there was the suggestion of a unit to run under the tv and under the window. It looked fab. The sofa can’t move forward as there is a door which it would block. It isn’t really a problem as their are usually just the two of us, if we have visitors we are either in another room or position ourselves on the sofas to chat. The occasional chair is useful for being able to see others and we do move that around or sit it out of the corner. We have some art, black framed but black and white. The vintage chair is proving elusive but could be yet another neutral! With all of this you can see my definite reluctance to commit to a colour scheme. I suppose that’s where the idea of black and neutral rugs came from. Any suggestions welcome. Relieve my indecision!😂

I would definitely try and light it. You might consider lining the shelf with a different material. Wood or marble. Then a few very simple ornaments or books. Some great styling ideas for something similar on Houzz. I wouldn't change the colour. Logs are too rustic for your modern style.

I do have some lights which I will get fitted and think will add few nice ornaments, picture frame etc to finish it all off. Thanks

Depending on the other elements in your room, I would line the bottom as Isla suggested, in wood or even a black marble or similar, you can often get off-cuts which may fit. Will finish it off nicely.

i must admit I'm thinking logs! The shelf looks really quite low for ornaments? They also tend to look better layered in height which would be tricky plus tou need soace with the top of the shelf

It would be good to see your furniture but it looks as if you’ve got a berber style rug so i would assume logs would work?

Hi Chris! I kind of agree with @minnie101 I like the log look - you already have the dark stylish interior so adding log fillers to the bottom of your media wall will look cool as well as keep on trend with the theme. One of our customers did something similar (obviously a different style) but you can see with the logs they just made the room! I hope this helps, Sarah! 😊

I agree with logs. They can add another element to the room and wood can look really good with a contemporary style. You can actually buy posh logs that have a tidier outline and are decorative rather like wallsauce’s picture.

For the bottom shelf of your media wall, consider stacked logs for a rustic vibe, lighting with ornaments for ambiance, or painting it black with ornaments for a modern touch. You could also try vintage vinyl records, potted plants, or framed photos. Experiment and see what fits your style best!
