Design Dilemma Bedrooms

Advice re updating a tiredbedroom please

Hi,

Below are pictures of a spare bedroom with cream and brown fitted cupboards , bedside tables etc which I hate but are brilliant storage! Would love to make it a beautiful guest room but really don’t know where to start !

I wondered whether changing the handles on doors might help, painting the walls a different colour … maybe a sage green ? A large rug and a chair ? Change of blinds ?

Any advice greatly received from you brilliant people as you can tell I have a clue how to go about things !

I think this is a great room and if you don’t love it it is because cream cabinets look like a dated choice and the absence of contrast makes it look boring.

So you need to decide if you are painting just the walls or cabinets too.

If you are prepared to paint the cabinets they you can choose a smart theme of French grays and other neutrals, or a pretty theme of blush colours or a trendy pale grey and brown theme.

If you have to work with the creaminess of the cabinets your sage green sounds like it isn’t bold or current enough and if you like green I would choose a stronger olive option, but any colour will work as long as there is enough contrast to be interesting.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply Jonathan …so good to get advice. You are so right re the cream. Sadly the cream and brown cabinets will have to stay just now so am open to any colours [not just a green] that would update room with paint , curtains curtains, rugs etc .

If you've got the time and the inclination (and budgets are tight) I reckon it's worth giving the paint a go to see how it looks. Lots of the kitchens we're doing for clients now are ones with painted finishes and although (as mentioned above) this isn't the most classic style/a bit old fashioned it will look completely different painted. New handles... save up for the kitchen you really want!

I'm in total agreement with Jonathonandb1972. I think the wall tiles are quite modern. The flooring lets the whole thing down and replacing it would vastly improve the overall look. You could also go for a dark chocolate feature wall to match in with the flooring on the wall with the sink and mirror.I noticed the bottom of the shower, i have just done the same with bendable acrylic sheet matched to the colour of the walls in my downstairs shower room. ( So you can access the pipework ) We have ( my wife has ) - just finished this room, choosing not to hack the tiles from the wall as it makes a big old mess, she's covered over the tiles with Tongue and Groove and re-tiled the inside of the shower.Transformed the old place! She's a clever old stick and a top tiler!

I was going to suggest to change the cabinets doors/handles and the plinths ? and keep the carcass, for the island replace or add on a side end panels matching the doors as it does in the picture? lets hang that out of the window for now but don t let go until your positive that you don t want it? firstly , the floors , if your planning to change just the tiles so it keeps the kitchen separated from the dinner/living ? brown wood style porcelain tile or going through out with the brown tiles For the walls Farrow & Ball ,Cooking Apple Green xxx it seems ,You have a backdated ? cooker/oven,extractor fan, microwave, fridge , it does remind me off some thing from Back To The Future , THEY NEED TO GO,stain less steel all the way Mosaic tiles, brown with a mix colours, above the kitchen work top upstands , or you can continue the paint for the walls i can t see the sink ,is it white?, probably you will need to up date it as well ? stainless steel and a its wise to get a deep base

What sort of look are you going for? If it were my kitchen I would repaint in a neutral throughout, cornforth white or similar. If the existing cupboard doors are white I would leave them (can't tell if white or cream in the photo) If they are cream I'd consider painting them either neutral or possibly a deep blue. Replace the handles with a cup style or a D pull in a metal to complement whichever metal accent you decide to have on the lighting. I'd replace the worktops with a high quality slim laminate, I have duropal calacatta and it often gets mistaken for real marble. I'd be tempted to have an upstand instead of tiles but possibly an antique mirror behind the range. If changing the worktop I'd get rid of the curved open shelves on the base run as I think this dates the kitchen. I'd keep the 12-pane door but paint it black and replace the handle with a black one to mimic a crittall door. I'd reduce the number of open shelves to one each side but take the one on the door wall full width to reach the adjoining wall. Replace the lighting - have a look at Matalan. They often have similar styles to Jim Lawrence. Have a look at DeVol kitchens for inspiration if you like that style.

You just need to find an image you like and copy it.

I like this image because the white brightens up the cream. This green is contemporary and the grey/blue accents pretty it up.

I would absolutely keep the storage and consider painting it to match a wall colour that you like to knock it back a bit. Changing the handles will make a world of difference too. In time and when budget allows you could update the doors to something more modern or simple if you so desired.

I love the furniture! I do love anything that has a “country” vibe and I think sticking to that style but adding a bolder colour on the walls as Jonathan suggests is the way to go. Jonathan’s picture is fab and green is such a restful shade so perfect for a bedroom. I would paint the walls, change the door knobs on the furniture and then step back and see what you think. Farrow & Ball or Little Green have a fantastic range of bolder greens so worth a look.

Many thanks for advice Sonia . Whilst you were posting we took a leap of faith and started painting with Farrow and Ball Caulk green …. gulp ! Hope will be ok . Will need to decide on wardrobe handles etc as well as all accessories …

I like it. Try not to judge until all the accessories are in place such as art, lamps, bedding etc.

It’s quite a traditional choice because it’s a deep shade of sage. I would have chosen a green with more yellow in it but your original thought was to go for a sage and so it’s likely your taste. Keep going and see how you feel about the end result.
