Kerb appeal on plain frontage

Could you help me with advise on how to get more kerb appeal for my bungalow. It has a ver plain frontage and I was thinking of changing the windows and adding a porch or veranda and maybe some cladding. What do you think?
The porch picture below is what I was thinking of or something similar.

It's a nice bungalow. Do the windows need replacing? If they're upvc, it is possible to get them painted. I wouldn't do the American/Australian verandah thing.

Hi all, Thank you so much for all the helpful comments and suggestions, and sorry that it's taken me so long to respond - house renovation and work have been keeping us on our toes! This has become a long post, so a quick reminder - we were looking to renovate and rewire our 60s house to update it and also make it more wheelchair friendly downstairs for when my mother-in-law comes to visit. We employed an architect and came up with what turned out to be an 'aspirational' design (much more than the budget!) so we ended up deciding to split things into two stages: Stage One to add a downstairs wetroom for accessibility, remove chimney throughout and add a porch Stage Two to do the extension across the rear, removing the conservatory to open out a large kitchen/diner and add a utility room The layout below shows both Stages One and Two as complete. Bits shown in red are existing walls which have been/will be removed (apart from the wall in red in the seating area below which is between the existing kitchen and dining room - that's a mistake). So.....the building work is now done - hurray! Stage One is complete, we are much poorer, and we now need to decorate the whole house :-) Some before and after photos below - please bear with the terrible photography skills. The rooms aren't big enough to allow for expansive photos!: We've re-plastered throughout, apart from in the kitchen and upstairs bathroom, as we'll deal with those later. Current challenge is deciding how on earth to pick paint colours and flooring throughout.... Anyway - hopefully that gives you a sense of where we've got to. Best wishes

Good afternoon, If you are seeking to change the appearance of the property then you may need to seek planning approval from your local council, such as rendering the façade of the property. We would suggest doing something similar to the photo below, with a combination of timber cladding and white render.

Render is very 'on trend' right now, especially coupled with grey windows. 100s of houses across the country are receiving 'the treatment' in the same way. However, I think that when trends move on, what was once a house with it's own character, appropriate to its age, is obliterated by a pastiche of a passed fad and style not necessarily in keeping with the house. The resulting problem then is that you're left with a render that will need re-painting regularly and window frames which were in fashion but may later appear dated, that will require replacing or repainting. Personally, I think if you render it, it'll take on the look of a scout hut - sorry

Very pretty house that just needs some more planting. I would remove that strip of grass and plant some flowers there instead leaving your access path in place. My front garden faces NE but the plants do really well. Things like Aubretia, Sedum, Hardy Geraniums and Erigeron thrive there. The 2 roses are also doing well. I love Hibiscus and have 2 in my back garden. Here is Erigeron, Geranium and Aubretia. All very easy to grow.

I think it depends on your budget and the rest of the street. If everyone has extended and done their own thing then there is less pressure to confirm but if all the houses look like yours I would reign in your plans and just replace the windows.

If you feel confident that a unique makeover will sit well on the street and enhance its value then there are lots of things you can do. I love these verandahs but would point out that most of us have a drive in front of our front doors so only do it is you have a nice outlook

Wow that is a pretty out there update. However I do have a soft spot for the American house styles with all that lovely cladding, so it could work and certainly more interesting than the usual grey windows and white render combo. However, some planning depts are not that keen on updates to the front of a house if it differs too much from the neighbours. I do like it though.

I think you just need to wait till your planting matures. It’s looking a bit lack lustre now as the plants are quite small and don’t really impact. Give them a spring with some fertiliser for them to mature and create more impact. A porch or over hang will potentially reduce your light to the interior.

We don't live on a street of houses, we are in the country and stand on an acre plot. The front is very flat. We have added a deck to the back of the house as attached which has worked well. Also added a carport to front. Will attach photos. Glad for all your suggestions.
