How can I fit an induction hob in place of a range cooker?

We have just moved home and our new kitchen is of a pretty high standard with granite worktops and decent units. However, it has a 90cm wide range cooker that we detest - it’s also broken and needs to be removed.

We really would like to replace the range cooker with separate high level ovens and an induction hob where the range cooker used to be but once the range cooker is removed there’s a 90cm gap in the granite. We don’t really want to replace all the granite as that would be expensive and the granite is perfectly good but we can’t match it in order to fill the gap.

Has anyone tackled a similar problem before and if so, how did you solve it?

You also have additional problems of sourcing additional cabinets to go where the range is- I bet that gap is not a standard size. And your tiled floor could also be a problem because you will likely need some extra power brought in as a couple of stand alone ovens and an induction hob will almost certainly exceed the power supply you have behind that range.

I would replace the range cooker with a new higher specification one. Very true about the power to an induction hob. Having had both range cookers (3) and wall ovens I prefer the range cookers and they are less restrictive in kitchen design as all the cooking as in one place. Jonathan is right it there is no just changing it to an induction hob. Retrofitting it has all sorts of ramifications that will really impact your existing kitchen. Units, floor (ours had to be dug up for a new power cable for induction top of range cooker) and also the worksurface. Try and find a solution that works until you are ready to replace your whole kitchen and flooring. The only stopgap might be a new range cooker. You have just moved, couldn't you get it fixed until you decide how the kitchen works best for you?

For me this is just a concept for now. I will not be at the stage to commission anything for a while. I am hoping the idea will take off and by the time I am ready to redo my kitchen I will be able to pick one up off the shelf. I imagine you could have two types - one more portable by lifting but still stable when cooking, that could be a cheaper version - and a luxury version - stone top, and steel base with hydraulic wheels as you suggested BIR. People seem to argue about what is better - kitchen table or island but this hybrid could have the benefits of both. I imaging you could design a lid for the induction hob so it would essentially be a table when the hob is not in use. I guess people might say a portable hob would have the same benefits and be more flexible but from the pictures they look more precarious than a flat level hob. Also if cooking a family meal it would be common to use three or maybe four hobs and then the portable hobs would take up more space. What do you think? If it could be made safe is it a product you could see working for many people or am I just being eccentric?

Ah Carolina that's the first time I've read someone saying they miss gas! High pitched noise would annoy the hell out of me. And we will have a flush ceiling extractor (Westin stratus) which apparently works slightly better with gas. Hmmm. What make is yours? OnePlan, I know my flaws, I am lazy so would either skip the j cloth (risky) or leave it on the hob all the time to avoid getting it in and out of a drawer each time (not pretty). I was expecting replies saying it's not a problem! Maybe gas is best for us after all. Just feels a bit... unmodern??

To be honest having an induction or a gas depends a lot on the person and your cooking style. Induction is definitely easier to clean and maintain and it heats up much quicker. It is also safer for homes with children since you won't burn, there is just residual heat from the pots. But, it is not advisable for people who have pacemakers because of the magnetism. And in terms of cooking, it is probably not the best for Asian foods, since you need the woks to have the heat from fire, or if you are doing chapatis, etc. Another things, is that you need to change all your pots and pans for special ones, iron pots are fine. Personally, I find it easier to clean but it doesn't make rice the same way, there is a slight difference in the final result, so for me it is great but I find foods cooked on fire get a better taste (that is just my personal opinion). Still I prefer the convenience of an induction hob. And for the installation, you'll need your electrician to install it for you. Contact the electrician before buying to check what sort of electric works you'll need, and what hob feed is better for your kitchen. Good luck

I was unsure of a black hob on white worktop however since my units are carbon/graphite it does help it blend in better. I do think if I had all light units it would make the hob stand out perhaps too much! Sorry, not the pic of a white hob....... I have never actually saw a white hob!

Thank you Jonathon and Isla - you’re both right of course to highlight power requirements but in this case any additional power feeds can be brought in through the wall so the floor won’t need to be modified. Cabinet sizing is definitely a consideration though - the gap is 91 cm so we plan to use a 90 cm drawer unit and make up the difference either side with a filler of some kind. As for a fix or replacement range cooker, I’m afraid we fundamentally don’t like them and bending over to take heavy, hot food trays out of ovens is becoming increasingly difficult for us. We have previously fitted wall-mounted ovens and an induction hob and that combination works perfectly for us so that’s the solution we’re aiming for. This is all part of a refurb/refresh for the kitchen but we don’t really want to throw away the perfectly good granite that’s already in place.

It may be that you can get a near perfect match to the granite by shopping around but you will have to accept extra joints than you would have normally had

Great that you have a solution. It's also great that you know what works for you and are going to recreate it. Practicality is always a great place to start.
