Looking for someone who can design and build workshop shed
Comments (9)Nice Tractor shed ! Normally when constructing wooden wall, you would just create the openings in the frame for the windows and doors out of the same timber as you go by changing the postition and length of the noggins. You don't buy frames for the windows as they just screw to the wood. Door frames are easily ordered off the internet, so when you're doing the construction, know in advance what size windows and door frames you want. The challenge is the roof construction as it needs to be sound and the whole building will likely need to comply with building regs, therefore, i'd suggest that unless you can design this to comply with building regs yourself, then you'd need a structural engineer to do it for you. You need allsorts of different sized timbers for different points on the building and roof, so best to either find one that you can order from the net and amend a little or get the structural engineer to tell you what you need. ( he would do that anyway on his plan ) Plans too are often available off the internet, but you pay for the service as it's a skilled and time consuming job. If you're not happy with all of the construction yourself, then i'd still suggest a good carpenter. I'm sure you can find one that will be happy for you to work along side and not just take over, as i get the impression that's what you'd like. I've done the same for some customers. However, you must be prepared for the fact, that you may slow him down and time is money ( no offence, I don't know your abilities with regards building construction ! ) Here's a good guide for planning permission etc on Timber framed buildings Timber frames There are some wonderful buildings on here that may suit, or the carpenter could amend :- Warwick Garages As for the Sheet cladding :- It's a specialist fit job really as there are all sorts of bits and bobs you need to bolt them together and then to make the roof ridge. You would be best to use a site like 'My Builder' to find a specialist in your area that can do it for you. Again, with this, you need to find out the sizes of the sheet materials available before you can plan for the roof timbers because, the sheets come in particular sizes, the roof timbers need to be the right distance apart to bolt to the timbers without the need to cut each one to size with an angle grinder. Here's and example of sheet cladding suppliers Steel roof sheets It all sounds very complicated I know, to people that build stuff all the time it's not that bad, you just need to know an awful lot if you're going to start from scratch and not buy pre-fabricated. Hope this has all helps. I wish you bags of luck with your project, it sounds very exciting. Get a structural engineer and chippy on board to help you and you'll be fine!...See MoreGarden ideas for terraced garden
Comments (8)Hi Sue, thanks very much for your for your much appreciated comments, yes we now have realised that not trying too hard to cultivate this area and having a 'wild' element with meadow grass and a mown path is the best option. May I also ask you for advice regarding an old Box hedge we have on one of the terraced areas which has grown very thick and is quite high, we have tried to support it to tie it back in places but due to the position of our house we experience high winds at times and the hedge is really starting to lean over and it is quite a difficult hedge to continually trim and maintain. We are thinking of removing it in the winter as a 'project' and replacing it with a lower fence which we could then cover with climbing plants. Does this sound a good idea?...See MoreShed I paint it a darker colour?
Comments (22)Ha ha - sorry didn’t get these posts until the last one from ED today. Yes, backed out & went for pale / sage green again, but slightly different as ED correctly noted! Although I still love the darker colours, the pale green suits the style of our garden so I don’t regret it....See MoreIdeas to make north facing garden look bigger and brighter
Comments (20)If I was going to do just one thing I would replace the stepping stones with a decent sized path. I favour long narrow slabs embedded in gravel with an edging to contain the gravel. Or just butted and staggered slabs if you don’t mind the additional maintenance with a staggered edge against grass. Plants do a better job than fences in making boundaries disappear. Climbers won’t take up so much room. Evergreen climbers on the garden building will give all year round interest and soften the brick surface. It isn’t well known but the evergreen Euonymus fortunei will climb, if given a little help, if planted up against a wall. Slow to get going but will thrive in sun and shade and is as tough as old boots. Silver queen has green leaves edged with white which brightens a shady corner. You can grow other plants through it and in front of it. I think a pergola is preferable to an awning. The honeysuckle Lonicera hehryi is evergreen and will grow in sun and shade but I don’t believe it is scented. There are scented honeysuckles and roses that will be pleasant to sit under. A green roof controls the temperature in a building. Great to look at from upper windows but it can be pricy. Sedum is commonly used. You say you don’t want a patio at the rear of the house but I would at least consider a path along the wall outside the doors. Set it away from the house to make room for plants. Would you consider moving the shed to the rear fence? Whilst allowing for access you could plant a hedge in front and in front of that the reflective water feature already mentioned or just a reflective surface as a feature. It will throw light back into the garden and will give depth. An arbour with a bench might be nice here to enjoy the water....See MoreIsla Cherry
