Is a bath in the bedroom a good idea?
Comments (34)I've enjoyed this in a holiday let (NorthWest Georgia, USA) as part of the very rustic charming cabin decor - the bath was a reproduction Victorian hip bath set in front of a rather large fireplace. It felt and looked wonderful. But water did splash beyond the slate tiling no matter how careful we were and our hostess told us they were seriously considering either adding a 3" lip all the way around the tiled area, or removing the bath completely. I've wondered ever since what she did in the end....See MoreIdeas sought for a garage conversion
Comments (7)Depending on your family situation (eg. do you have kids, elderly relatives who stay, do you entertain a lot, etc), I would make the kitchen into a kitchen diner the whole width of the house and move your current dining room wall to where continue the kitchen wall which will make your dining room bigger and then convert the garage into a lounge. If your current dining room is big enough for you, then just don't move the wall and make a part of the kitchen diner a play / TV area for the kids / office. Just then beware with flooring and the "echo" effect. I find with many more open-plan type kitchen diners there are tiles / wood on the floors and not enough soft furnishings which makes it really loud and echo-ey when kids are playing....See MoreAnyone got any good ideas for making an ex council house look cool?
Comments (61)I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . This is my kitchen, it is so much lighter and more space . The back board is the same as the work top , so no tiles to grout ....See Morekitchen in garage - good idea?
Comments (3)The kitchen extension is obviously vastly better, but comes at a cost as you say. I would consider things like how big your garden is, how long you will stay in the property, and ceiling price of the street. Personally if you decide not to extend, I would have the kitchen diner at the back (knock through the current wall), keep the front half of the garage for storage and resale, then convert the back to either a utility/shower room OR knock it through to enlarge the kitchen further....See Morerachelmidlands
