Advice please on attic space & 'feature' wall
Comments (11)Hi, As a plasterer I'd just like to add that you may have to get the artex tested for asbestos before removing. Don't be tempted to do it yourself just incase! Ask your builder/plasterer how he intends to remove it to check his knowledge. Products can. ow be bought that are painted on and these soften it enabling it to be scraped off easily. Also be prepared to lose up to 150mm down from your existing ceiling depending on how it's specified to be insulated. You'll need a gap between your tiles and felt and the new insulation (this will prevent moisture tracking to the new plaster) then insulation between the roof timbers and then a layer of insulation covering all of this. Then you will have the plasterboard screwed into the timber. I hope I haven't put you off the whole idea now. Good luck with the project!...See MoreAttic conversion
Comments (4)Thanks Lynne. Ok - that makes it potentially a lot easier! You have 2 options when you need more headroom: 1 - You could lower the first floor ceiling, if there is room to do so, although this is of course very messy! You could then add a dormer to the rear under permitted development (if your property has permitted development rights). The other option is to raise the roof , which could be done in a few ways. You could either remove the existing roof completely and obtain planning approval to raise the pitch to enable more headroom, and add a dormer (if needed) in the process. The other option is to extend the front roof slope and add a dormer which provides sufficient headroom at the back. Please note that planning permission will always be required to raise the roof, and if you are in a conservation area, area of outstanding natural beauty, or Green Belt, or have any other restriction on the property, it may be harder to obtain planning permission for this. I hope this helps give you an idea of what you may be able to achieve. It would be advisable to speak to a local architect or agent who knows the area and will be able to provide more specific information and advice. All the best....See MoreUnderfloor Heating Advise Please

Comments (20)The good thing is that, despite the dust and debris in the attic, it's something I could envisage cleaning up, hoovering and replacing the insulation on me own. So all I would need are the raw material and some weekends off. Plus, my daughter and I suffer from all sorts of allergies, such as pollen/hayfever and eczema. So thought this natural wool may be ideal, plus it's said to absorb moisture, helping in keeping the attic dry. Which is already under attack from mould. The two negatives it has are wrt costs and its thermal R rate. If I can fit it myself, could help lower these costs and wrt to its lower insulating property, with global warming etc, maybe we might not need that high level of insulation? Except in 2012 (beast from the east), the last 15-20 winters in Birmingham have been pretty mild. That's my theory at least Thanks Mel...See MoreHU-768402840
