Comments (100)Dear @judibutler I assume you are referring to a wall which is wholly above ground and that you have completely ruled out damp tracking into the wall from above. A lot depends on the size and thickness of the wall and other factors, such as if the building is listed. Damp penetration (driving rain) through granite walls has been an ongoing problem in church towers in the southwest of England for some time. Ironically the problem often seems to get worse after re-pointing in lime. Granite is fairly impervious and was often in laid in large blocks meaning trapped water has little chance of getting out through thin mortar joints. Historic England held an excellent conference on the subject in 2013; the transcript of proceedings can be found at: http://content.historicengland.org.uk/content/docs/research/damp-towers-conf2013-programme-transcripts.pdf A roughcast lime render coat may help, but there could equally be voids in the wall which are holding damp and may need grouting. However, grouting is a very tricky and expensive technique which should not be undertaken lightly, and only works if one knows exactly where the voids are. Over-cladding the whole wall with semi-sacrificial weather boarding may be a last resort. This and rendering are likely to require planning consent. Depending on where you are located, a company like ArchiMetric (www.archimetrics.co.uk) could insert some interstitial moisture monitors into the wall to try and find out exactly where and when the damp is getting in and how it is moving through the wall, but this may be expensive. Some localised investigation by dismantling pockets of stone may be useful. The Society of Ancient Buildings helpline (mornings only on 020 7456 0916) may be able to help with specialists in your area. Most importantly try to get an understanding of how water is getting into and moving through your wall before you embark on anything. Comments (25)Thank you! Very clever. Hmm. I have no idea - ha ha! What are the white lights. I'm slightly concerned that the whites won't match. There are so many whites. The coppers might not match either. Could just do 5 mediums at different heights or 3 mediums and a few small - all in the striped. Not sure. They would be in a straight line as that's how the track is. What do you think might look best? My table would be going across the room and is bigger than that table so lights wouldn't be as close to the table. Do you think all stripes would be too much? Comments (9)Do you have room to have the entrance on the side as that helps enormously. You will still end up with a bed sitting lounge, but can fit a kitchen and range, a wet room and mezzanine above the kitchen. The only problem with this design is no storage, No separate bedroom so no wardrobe, chest of drawers etc This puts the front door at the front, but you still need to be right there with the soil pipe, so bathroom comes first. Kitchen with no window. Allows for mezzanine over kitchen but room for only one sleeping area, however, it is now separate from the lounge. S till not a lot of storage for clothes, which would have to be up on the mezzanine. By using the plan above and utilising the whole space over the kitchen and bathroom, you could have the mezzanine there. Comments (13)There are plenty of double ovens on the market. I rarely use my top oven for cooking, only for grilling bits and bobs, but mainly toast. To be honest I could manage without it but just like the thought of it being there as a back up. Warming drawers are expensive. We fitted 2 a couple of months ago for a customer (one in each housing under the ovens) and her reason for choosing them was that she didn't like microwaves. Whether or not she has used them, I don't know. They're not something I would personally cough up for. I guess it depends on how many you're cooking for on special occasions that you feel leads you to want the double oven. I cook for 8 most Christmas days and manage fine in the bottom part of my double oven. The turkey is cooked before everything else goes in and I have 3 shelves Personally I do not like to see an integrated microwave installed oven a double oven. It's too high....See More
