How do I make different timber colours work in an open plan area? no

How should I select colours for my dining table, choose the acoustic panel cladding for the chimney wall, and decide on the herringbone flooring in the snug area to complement the walnut shelves and backsplash in the kitchen, ensuring that these choices don't overly darken the rooms?

The shelving looks quite muted so provided you go with the same wood for all other treatments you should be ok.

Hi. It's difficult to say without knowing exactly what the business requirements are. What flooring is down atm as I would go for large concrete effect tiles to minimise flooring costs? Add rugs for texture plus if you need to work on the floor? I would divide the area so you have a work area and a seating area with kitchenette. Use industriał style dividers or bookcases to split the space. Colours will need to be light for working so maybe a very pale grey or white for walls but use dark blue or charcoal velvet for a sofa with maybe a leather chair. I assume the other end of the room is the same? I would build cupboards with shelves ŵall to ceiling, deep enough to hold fabric ( I might be tempted to paint these in a charcoal though!). Maybe look at a library ladder for reaching the top shelves. I'd buy an enormous old desk in wood and leather, have a look in antique shops for the double style desks. You can buy large vintage filing cabinets for any buttons, threads etc ( there's an antique shop in long melford which sells cabinets and desks if you're close to suffolk!) Use a large pendant light in the seating area with floor lamps but maybe look at the industriał style track lighting for the working area combined with task lights for the desk. Thank you guys ... food for thought as always! @ Jonathan, it was a bit of a dilemma trying to work out what room to put into what zone as where the lounge is will be suffering from inner dark room syndrome. In the end we decided to put the lounge there as the kitchen and dining spaces are where we want the most natural light. We have the sofa in that configuration because it's a set we own and was an expensive very big custom built U shaped one so it has to come with us! Plus with the TV going on the wall the utility wall, it would not work for us in terms of having the sofa symmetrically around the TV ... the final thing to settle it was that on some days when we have finished dinner and can't be bothered to do the dishes straightaway, at least we don't have to look at them ha ha! @ Cathy when we tend to have large social gatherings we are always in little clusters all over the house and when we have small friends gatherings we tend to spend the whole evening at the dining table ... maybe moving to the lounge for final coffees but not always however now we are planning to have a corner fireplace it will be nice to "retire" in the lounge Re: storage, there is going to be a sideboard behind the sofa (to hopefully stop them from moving back) which will serve as storage ... though am sure hubster will have ideas of making it a minibar! Back to @ Jonathon - I think the bench idea for extra seating around the dining table is a very good one which I hadn't thought about. It will serve the purpose of as Jen P said, being able to sit and look at the garden and also provide the much needed extra seating when we have family get togethers and save us having to stock up on extra chairs! I think a bench with storage underneath perhaps the way to go?

Hi Susannah, I would advise you to get samples pots of all your choices and paint the relevant walls (large areas and in corners to check colours in shadow too). Make sure you judge the effect of each colour on the other in the room. Best wishes, JNSQ

Hi all, Thank you for your comments; I appreciate them! Natasha - the units you have suggested are very much what I had in mind. We will have a shaker kitchen and the media unit would also be shaker style and would have 4-6 cupboards with the TV in the middle with book shelves either side. Part of the reason we kept a partial wall was to make the space more usable. I can’t envision how the fully open plan room will be able to meet all our needs, but I am open to ideas! I feel that open plan would be more impressive, but potentially less usable. With regards to the doors. I do plan to reverse the doors both into the kitchen and family room part, but couldn’t work out how to do it on the app I used for the floor plan. It is a 1920s house and we have the original doors which we are planning to keep. We are also keeping a lot of floor space as when the table is not extended, we still have young children with lots of Lego and trains etc. I plan for these to be hidden in the cupboards at bedtime. J - we haven’t installed the kitchen but we have ordered it and paid a big deposit. Some of the units are bespoke/irregular sizes and I don’t think we would be willing to change this. For your dining table, perhaps you could choose a lighter shade that contrasts with the walnut to keep the space feeling open and airy, maybe a pale oak or a white marble. For the acoustic panel cladding on your chimney wall, a mid-tone grey would reduce noise while balancing the walnut's richness without overpowering the room. With the herringbone flooring in the snug area, consider a lighter wood finish to complement the walnut shelves without making the space feel too dark. But, at the same time - the options are quite endless. Definitely try and stick to lighter tones

I would keep the other elements in the same wood to avoid the space feeling cluttered.
