What is your go-to source for home decor inspiration?

There are so many great ways to find inspirational pics for when you're re-designing your home. We encourage our clients to use Pinterest boards to help give their designer a better understanding of their style. Where do you often find yourself going for home inspiration?

Mine is 'other' - namely books. I've got a collection of design books going back to the early seventies and I like to see interiors that look stylish regardless of era. I think it's really important to be aware of the difference between trends and good design. I quite like pinterest but not a fan of instagram.

I'm with eimearcahill, there is absolutely NOTHING tasteful about my Christmas decorations, it's excess everywhere. I did suggest when my daughters both got to their twenties that I might scale things back a bit but, after a reaction that could have earned them a walk on part in The Grinch who Stole Christmas, I realised that it was obviously very important that I spent the best part of a day turning the house into Santa's grotto :D I now have a granddaughter so I am resigned to many more years to come....

No such thing as a "run of the mill" house if I'm involved! : ) ) Teasing aside though, every house/flat/apartment or room for that matter, can present itself to it's full potential and is just waiting to be unlocked..So for me that means colour dark or light.. I never see a home, room or space I cannot instantly imagine and make beautiful... There is always a way.. Buyers see visuals first so making an impact can be rather important with competition! A house should really sell itself.. With so much competition it's got to be how attractive it is to get it noticed, and then... is it in my budget....Every other checklist happens after those initial two. Assuming you have already decided on a location..... I do agree though the display of one's sock collection or the latest in Aussie bum pants are not desirable! : ))

The room is in good shape and it appears to be only cosmetic changes that are needed, so I would consider simplifying the whole design as follows: · Paint: You mention grey as one of your preferred colours, so I would try a sample of either Farrow or Ball’s Elephant’s Breath paint or Strong White to see what looks best sits best in the room. Both are contemporary favourites but will flatter the space and alter the atmosphere. Otherwise, aim for off-whites with a creamy, yellow tone to encourage warmth. · Furniture: Purchase furniture with legs to encourage the flow of light and space but if possible do not block the lovely elongated windows. Add a feature Chesterfield ottoman to centre the room and soften the new space. · Window treatment: Instead of curtains, I would actually use sheer voiles across the windows and have Roman blinds in place for the colder evenings to enhance the sumptuous, traditional feel. · Pieces: Add a large timeless mirror above the fireplace to bounce light around the room and maintain that area as the focal point. · Lighting: Work with illuminating the light through the room not only via a pendant light (consider a glass chandelier here) as this will only provide task lighting. You also want to aim for ambient lighting via glass base lamps in the corners and free standing tall lamps. · Soft furnishings: Apply hints of mustard and teal into the soft furnishings such as the cushions will complement the tones from the parquet flooring.

Hi Louise, this is a really interesting discussion, thank you for sharing and looks like it was a great feature! Me personally, I think the secret of my success is being passionate and loving what I do. Then everything else follows naturally! To achieve a work/life balance I have to be quite strict with myself, and recognise I need time to relax to be at my best. I am currently really inspired by the Scandinavian lifestyle - my boyfriend is Danish and I am trying to learn more about 'Hygge'. It's all about being comfortable, getting cosy and appreciating the little things such as a hot cup of coffee and lighting candles. That being said, with Summer approaching I'm excited to start spending more time outdoors - pretty sunsets always inspire me and make me feel good!

I also have a library of design books which are constantly updated. Insta and Pinterest are too saturated for me. My head can't cope with that flood of images. Travel, hotels and restaurants are a fantastic source of inspiration. I also use Netflix there are some very stylish backgrounds to a lot of content. Programs with stunning scenery in wilderness areas also inspires me for colour and texture.

I like Pinterest as the ideas are affordable. Not a fan of expensive magazines but they can be good for adaptable ideas.

Love that point Isla about Netflix backgrounds - they do often have beautiful homes. And Juliette, going back through timeless designs is a great way to create a home that you love and isn't just a current trend. A lot of food for thought here!
